Dorsal vein ectasia is a phenomenon where
blue veins prominently appear on the back of the hand.
Due to the thin skin characteristics of the hand,
the skin tends to thin out faster with age compared to other areas,
making the veins more noticeable.

The underlying causes are fundamentally different from varicose veins,
which occur due to vascular dilation and the malfunction of the internal vein valves.
Therefore, it is not strictly classified as a "varicose vein."
While it can be perceived as a cosmetic issue, it may occasionally be a sign of a medical problem.

Causes of dorsal vein ectasia

  • Aging

As we age, the skin on the back of the hand becomes thinner and loses elasticity, making the veins more prominent.

  • Genetic Factors

If there are noticeable hand veins in family members, genetic influences may be at play

  • Decrease in Body Fat

Weight loss due to dieting or exercise can make the veins appear more prominent

  • Exercise

During physical activity, an increase in blood pressure can temporarily cause the veins in the hand to swell.

  • Jobs Requiring Hand Use

Professions that involve frequently lifting heavy objects or require significant manual labor, such as crafting or sculpting, can lead to the appearance of expanded veins on the back of the hand.

Treatment Methods for Dorsal Vein Ectasia

Sclerotherapy

This method involves injecting a sclerosing agent into the vein, which closes
the vein and allows it to be absorbed by the body over time.
Sclerotherapy is the most common treatment for dorsal vein ectasia, and it can be performed easily
and without scarring using a syringe to inject the sclerosing agent into the affected veins.
The number of sessions typically ranges from 3 to 6, depending on the degree and extent of the protrusion of the veins,
and patients can resume their daily activities immediately after the procedure.
Side Effects:While sclerotherapy has very few side effects, it can occasionally lead to the formation
of a blood clot at the injection site, resulting in bruising or minor pain along the vein.
These symptoms can usually be resolved with massage and are considered a normal part of the healing process.
If a blood clot does not resolve on its own within two weeks after the procedure,
it may be necessary to visit a healthcare provider to have it removed.

Effects of Treatment for Dorsal Vein Ectasia

  • Younger and Healthier Appearance

By restoring a smooth hand without protruding veins, patients can achieve a more youthful and healthy impression.

  • Improvement in Aesthetic Confidence

Enhancing the appearance of the back of the hand can help regain aesthetic confidence.

  • In foreign countries, the treatment for dorsal vein ectasia is referred to as a "hand rejuvenation procedure," and it is performed more actively.
